Alan Broadbent is a very talented jazz musician from New Zealand. He is a skilled pianist, an arranger (someone who writes music for different instruments), and a composer (someone who writes original songs). He has worked with many famous singers and musicians throughout his career.
Early Life
Alan Broadbent was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on April 23, 1947. He started learning piano and music theory in his home country. In 1966, he moved to the United States to study music at the Berklee College of Music.
Later Life and Career
During the 1990s, Broadbent worked on Natalie Cole's album Unforgettable... with Love. He then became her pianist and conductor for her concert tours. His special arrangement for her video "When I Fall in Love" won a Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Arrangement.
He also won another Grammy Award for his arrangement of Leonard Bernstein's song "Lonely Town". This song was recorded by Shirley Horn. Alan Broadbent also wrote music arrangements for albums by Glenn Frey and Paul McCartney. He has also worked as a conductor for the famous singer Diana Krall.
In 2008, Alan Broadbent was given a special honor in New Zealand. He was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his great contributions to jazz music.
In November 2013, his solo piano album Heart to Heart received a top rating from Down Beat magazine. This shows how much his music is appreciated.
