History of Alberdi
Alberdi was started on August 29, 1930. It was founded when José Patricio Guggiari was the president of Paraguay. The town got its name from Juan Bautista Alberdi. He was a writer and diplomat from Argentina. He strongly supported Paraguay during the Paraguayan War, a big conflict in South America.
Where is Alberdi?
Alberdi is located along the Paraguay River. This river forms part of the border with Argentina. The town is in the northern part of Ñeembucú, a department in southeast Paraguay.
Nearby towns in Paraguay include Villa Oliva to the north and Villa Franca to the south. Across the Paraguay River to the west is the city of Formosa in Argentina.
Much of Alberdi is near Lake Ypoá. This area has many small rivers and streams. These waterways make the climate cool and humid. Because of all the water, areas near the river in Alberdi often flood when there is heavy rain.
People of Alberdi
Alberdi is an important town in the Ñeembucú department. In 2021, its population of 9,679 made up about 11% of the department's total population. Alberdi is the second most populated city in the department. Only Pilar, the capital of the department, has more people.
Alberdi's Economy
Shopping Hotspot
Alberdi is right on the border with Argentina. This makes it a popular place for shopping. Many people from the Argentine city of Formosa come to Alberdi. They cross the river to buy things like electronics and clothes. Prices in Alberdi are often much lower than in Argentina.
The local government in Alberdi helps with this trade. They offer speedboats to take shoppers across the Paraguay River. These boats run every half hour. This makes it easy for tourists to visit and shop. The main road, the Villeta–Alberdi–Pilar Route, also goes through the city.
Farming and Fishing
Besides shopping tourism, Alberdi also relies on farming and fishing. Farmers in Alberdi mainly grow cassava, lettuce, and squash. Fishing is also a smaller but important part of the local economy.
