Albert Dieudonné (born November 26, 1889 – died March 19, 1976) was a talented French actor, screenwriter, film director, and novelist. He is most famous for playing Napoleon Bonaparte in a very important silent film.
Life and Career
Albert Dieudonné was born in Paris, France. He started his acting career in 1908. His first role was in a silent film called The Assassination of the Duke of Guise. This film even had music written by a famous composer, Camille Saint-Saëns.
Dieudonné worked with the well-known director Abel Gance several times. Between 1915 and 1916, he acted in five of Gance's films. These included La Folie du Docteur Tube (1915) and Le périscope (1916).
Playing Napoleon
In 1925, Albert Dieudonné got a huge role. He was chosen to play the main character in Abel Gance's epic film, Napoléon. This movie was a very big production for its time. It helped make Dieudonné famous.
Other Work
Besides acting, Dieudonné also directed films. In 1924, he directed a drama called Catherine. He also acted in this film. A famous director, Jean Renoir, worked as his assistant on Catherine.
Dieudonné was also a writer. In 1929, he wrote a novel. This book was later turned into a musical comedy film in 1930. It was called The Sweetness of Loving. He also wrote the script for the 1936 film La Garçonne.
Albert Dieudonné passed away in Paris in 1976. He was 86 years old. He had a special wish for his burial. He wanted to be buried wearing his Napoleon costume.
