History of Albertville
The area now called Albertville was first known as "Hamburg." Joseph Vetsch gave it this name. In August of the same year, the Minneapolis and Northwestern Railroad Company bought land here. They built a railroad through the area. Today, this is the BNSF rail line in downtown Albertville.
About 30 years later, some important people helped the area grow. One of them was Albert Zachman. He gave land for the historic church near Central Park, also known as Lions Park. J.P. Eull and Theodore Aydt asked for the township to become a village. They wanted to call it Saint Michael Station. At that time, about 190 people lived there.
In 1903, the first election was held to build a village hall. It passed with a vote of 20 to 18. The hall cost $531.95, which would be about $4,035 today.
A few years later, the town raised money for a Catholic church. It was finished in 1902. This church was named the Church of St. Albert. This honored Albert Zachman for all his help to the town. In 1909, Father Duhr suggested changing the town's name to Albertville. This was also to honor Albert Zachman. The town agreed, but the name change did not become official until September 1919.
