Alborz province (Persian: استان البرز, Ostān-e Alborz) is one of the 31 provinces in Iran. Its capital city is Karaj. The province is located about 10 kilometers west of Tehran. It sits at the base of the Alborz mountains. Alborz is the smallest province in Iran by land area.
In 2006, the areas that now make up Alborz province had about 2 million people. By 2011, after the province was created, the population grew to over 2.4 million. The latest count in 2016 showed about 2.7 million people living there. Most people in Alborz province, about 92.6%, live in cities. The main group of people living in Alborz are ethnic Persians.

Getting Around Alborz Province
Alborz province has different ways to travel, connecting it to other parts of Iran.
Metro System
The Tehran Metro's Line 5 (dark green) connects to Karaj. There are three metro stations in Alborz province: Karaj, Mohammadshahr, and Golshahr. Another metro line runs for 25 kilometers from Golshahr to Hashtgerd. This line can carry up to 250,000 passengers every day.
Train Travel
Trains that go from Tehran to western Iran, including those heading to Turkey, pass through Karaj. Most of these trains stop at the Karaj railway station.
Bus Routes
Karaj is located on Free Way 2. This important highway connects Tehran with the city of Tabriz. Buses use this route to travel between these major cities.
You can find shared taxis, called savari, that travel from Tehran to different parts of Alborz province. These taxis have stations in areas like Vanak, Tajrish, Enghelab, and Azadi in Tehran. The cost of a ride depends on the route.
