Count Albrecht Konrad Reinhold Finck von Finckenstein (born October 30, 1660 – died December 16, 1735) was an important figure in Prussian history. He was a nobleman from Prussia, a top military leader (called a field marshal), and a skilled statesman.

Who Was Albrecht Konrad Finck von Finckenstein?

Albrecht Konrad Finck von Finckenstein came from a very old noble family in Prussia. Some records also suggest his family originally came from a place called Carinthia. His father was a chamberlain, which was an important official in the royal court.

He was born in a town called Saberau in the Duchy of Prussia. Throughout his life, he held many important roles. He became a Prussian field marshal, which is the highest rank in the army. He also taught two Prussian crown princes, who were future kings. He was the Governor of Pillau, a general leading a regiment, and a knight in important groups like the Order of the Black Eagle and the Order of St John. He was also a Captain in Krossen and the master of the large Finckenstein estate.

A Career in the Military

Albrecht Konrad Finck von Finckenstein started his military career serving in the Dutch army, and then later in the French army. However, he decided to leave the French service in 1689. This was when King Louis XIV of France started a war against Germany, destroying places like Heidelberg and its famous Heidelberg Castle.

He then joined the Prussian army in 1689 as a Major. He was known for being careful, moderate, and having excellent behavior. He became a Lord Chamberlain for two crown princes, meaning he managed their royal households.

In 1710, he was given the title of Imperial Count within the Holy Roman Empire and a Count in Prussia. This happened after the Battle of Malplaquet, a major battle where he successfully led the Prussian forces under the command of Prince Eugene. His military career reached its highest point in 1733 when he was made a Prussian field marshal.

Building Finckenstein Palace

Between the years 1716 and 1720, Count Finck von Finckenstein had a grand home built, known as Finckenstein Palace. The design for this beautiful palace was created by an architect named John von Collas.
