Alenoush Terian (Armenian: Ալենուշ Տէրեան; Persian: آلنوش طریان) was a very important Iranian-Armenian scientist. She was an astronomer and a physicist. Many people call her the 'Mother of Modern Iranian Astronomy'. She was born on November 9, 1921, and passed away on March 4, 2011.

Early Life and Family

Alenoush Terian was born in Tehran, Iran, on November 9, 1921. She came from an Armenian family. Her father, Arto, was a talented artist. He directed plays, wrote poems, and translated books. His special name was Arizad, which means 'Born to Aryan'. He even translated the famous Persian book, Shahnameh, into Armenian. Alenoush's mother, Varto Terian, was also involved in theater. She was a stage actress and director.

Education and Career

Alenoush Terian finished her studies in the Science Department at the University of Tehran in 1947. She started working in the university's physics lab right away. In the same year, she became the chief of lab operations.

She wanted to study more in France. She applied for a scholarship, but a professor named Dr. Hesabi did not approve it. He thought she had studied enough for a woman. But Alenoush did not give up! With her father's help, she went to France. In 1956, she earned her doctorate degree in atmospheric physics from Sorbonne University.

After getting her doctorate, she came back to Iran. She became an assistant professor in thermodynamics at the University of Tehran. Later, she received a scholarship from the German government. This allowed her to work on solar physics in Germany for four months. In 1964, Alenoush Terian made history. She became the first female professor of physics in Iran!

In 1966, she joined the Geophysics Committee at the University of Tehran. In 1969, she was chosen to lead the solar physics studies. She also helped start the solar observatory at the university. She worked there for many years. Alenoush Terian retired in 1979. She lived in Tehran until she passed away.

Legacy

Alenoush Terian's 90th birthday was a big celebration in Tehran. Many members of parliament and over 100 Iranian Armenians attended. She passed away on March 4, 2011, at the age of 90. Her work helped shape modern astronomy in Iran.
