Alexander Haim Gray (born June 21, 1899 – died April 10, 1986) was a Canadian ice hockey player. He played as a right winger for two famous teams, the New York Rangers and the Toronto Maple Leafs. He played in the NHL from 1927 to 1933.
Early Life and Hockey Start
Alex Gray was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but he grew up in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.
Before joining the big leagues, he played for five years with the Port Arthur Ports. This team was part of the TBSHL. During his time there, he was a top player. He scored the most goals in the league three times!
Playing in the NHL
In 1928, Alex Gray signed with the New York Rangers. This was a big step, as the Rangers are a team in the NHL.
He wore jersey number 2 and played on a line with teammates Paul Thompson and Murray Murdoch. That same spring, he helped the Rangers win the Stanley Cup. Winning the Stanley Cup is one of the biggest achievements in hockey!
After his first season in New York, Alex Gray was part of a major trade. He was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs along with another player, Lorne Chabot. In return, the Rangers received Melville "Butch" Keeling and John Ross Roach.
He played 13 games for the Maple Leafs during the 1928–29 season. This included 7 regular season games and 4 playoff games. After one season in Toronto, he moved to smaller leagues. He spent the rest of his hockey career playing there.
