Alex Wood (born March 14, 1955) is an American football coach. He is currently the wide receivers coach for the Pittsburgh Maulers. This team is part of the United States Football League (USFL).

Wood has also been a head football coach at two universities. He led the teams at James Madison University and Florida A&M University. As an assistant coach, he helped the University of Miami win two national championships. These big wins happened in 1989 and 1991.

Before becoming a coach, Wood played football himself. He played for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 1975 to 1977. He was a running back and played on special teams. He earned a degree in secondary education and social studies from Iowa in 1979. He started his coaching journey right after college as a student assistant. Alex Wood has more than 30 years of coaching experience. He has coached at both college and National Football League (NFL) levels.

College Coaching

Wood started his coaching career at his old school, Iowa. He then coached at several other colleges. These include Kent State and Southern Illinois. He was also a defensive coordinator for the Southern team.

He coached at Wyoming and Washington State. Later, he joined the Miami (FL) team. There, he helped them win two national championships. He also coached at Wake Forest.

Wood became a head coach at James Madison from 1995 to 1998. He later coached at Arkansas and Miami (OH). He was also an offensive coordinator at Buffalo. In 2014, he was the interim head coach for Buffalo for a short time. From 2015 to 2017, he was the head coach at Florida A&M. More recently, he coached at Delaware.

NFL Coaching

Alex Wood has also coached in the National Football League (NFL). He was a quarterbacks coach for the Minnesota Vikings. This was from 1999 to 2002. He then coached wide receivers for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2003. In 2004, he was the offensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals.
