Alexandra Bradshaw (April 20, 1888 – September 23, 1981) was a talented Canadian-American artist. She was known for her beautiful watercolor paintings. Alexandra was also a respected art professor. She taught art at Fresno State College in California. Her art was shown in many exhibitions across the United States for decades.

About Alexandra Bradshaw

Alexandra Christine Bradshaw was born in Nova Scotia, Canada. She loved art from a young age. She went to school to study art.

Her Education and Teachers

Alexandra attended the California State Normal School. She graduated in January 1908. Later, in 1914, she took more art classes. She studied at famous universities. These included Stanford University and the University of California, Los Angeles. She also studied at Columbia University in New York. Alexandra even went to Paris to learn from famous artists. Some of her teachers were Andre L'Hote and Hans Hofman.

Teaching Art

By 1917, Alexandra Bradshaw was teaching art. She taught at the California Normal School in Fresno. In 1920, she became very important. She was made the head of the Fine Arts Department. This was at Fresno State College. She held this important job for many years. She taught there until 1948. Many students learned from her. Two of her students, Don David and Hubert Buel, became well-known artists.

Her Life and Home

Alexandra Bradshaw had a summer home in South Laguna, California. It was near Three Arch Bay. She loved to paint the beautiful scenery there. Later in her life, she married Clarence Hoag. He was born in Nova Scotia, too. Clarence founded a printing company in Boston, Massachusetts.

Alexandra and Clarence lived in a special home. It was called Castle Clare. This castle was in Wakefield, near Boston. Clarence built it between 1922 and 1949. After Clarence passed away, the castle was divided into apartments. Sadly, Castle Clare burned down in 1974. Alexandra still kept her summer house in South Laguna, California.

Alexandra Bradshaw passed away on September 23, 1981. She died in Whittier, California. Her artworks are still shown today. You can see them at the California Regionalist Art Collectors Club.
