Aleksey Andreevich Tupolev (Russian: Алексе́й Андре́евич Ту́полев; born May 20, 1925 – died May 12, 2001) was a famous Soviet and later Russian airplane designer. He led the team that created the Tupolev Tu-144, which was the world's first super-fast passenger plane. He also helped design the "Buran" space shuttle and a large bomber plane called the "Tu-2000." These last two projects were stopped because there wasn't enough money.

About Aleksey Tupolev

Aleksey Andreevich Tupolev was born in Moscow on May 20, 1925. His father was Andrei Tupolev, a very famous Soviet airplane pioneer.

Early Career and Education

From 1942 to 1949, Aleksey worked as a designer at the Tupolev Design Bureau. This was his father's airplane design company. He finished his studies at the Moscow Aviation Institute in 1949.

A Special Flight

In September 1959, the Soviet leader, Khrushchev, visited the United States. He insisted on flying in the new Tu-114 plane. This plane had only made its first long flight a few months earlier.

To show everyone that the plane was safe, Aleksey's father, Andrei, sent Aleksey along on the flight. Khrushchev later said they didn't tell the public that Aleksey was on board. This was because they didn't want to explain why, as it might have made them look bad.

Leading the Design Bureau

Aleksey became the main designer at the Tupolev Design Bureau in 1963. He then became the general designer in 1973. This meant he was in charge of all the airplane designs.

Aleksey Tupolev passed away on May 12, 2001. He was buried in Moscow.

Amazing Airplane Projects

Aleksey Tupolev worked on many important airplane projects. Here are some of them:

  • Tupolev Tu-134: This was a twin-engine jet plane. It was built in the Soviet Union for short and medium flights. It was made from 1966 to 1989.
