Alexis Jordan's Journey to Music
Early Life and Talent Discovery

Alexis Jordan was born on April 7, 1992, in Columbia, South Carolina. She started writing songs when she was in third grade. When she was 11, her family moved to Santa Clarita, California. They moved so she could follow her dream of working in the arts. At age 12, Alexis even opened a concert for the legendary singer Smokey Robinson. This was at a special show honoring Stevie Wonder.
In 2006, Alexis auditioned for the first season of America's Got Talent. She sang Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing". She made it through to the semifinals. Judge Brandy brought her back to compete again after she didn't get enough public votes. Even though she was eliminated, her talent was clear.
From YouTube to Record Deal
After America's Got Talent, Alexis and her family moved to Atlanta. This helped her be closer to the music industry. There, she began uploading videos of herself singing cover songs on YouTube. She also sent out demo tapes of her music. By 2008, her YouTube channel had millions of views!
This huge online success caught the eye of the production team Stargate. They invited her to New York to record some songs. While she was in the studio, Jay-Z walked in. This led to Alexis becoming the very first artist signed to a new label called StarRoc/Roc Nation. This label was a partnership between Stargate and Jay-Z's Roc Nation.
Debut Album Success
Alexis Jordan's first album, Alexis Jordan, was released on February 25, 2011. She worked with producers like StarGate on the album. It reached number nine in the United Kingdom and number eleven in Australia.

The song was a big hit in Australia and the United Kingdom, reaching number three. In Australia, "Happiness" sold over 210,000 copies, earning a triple platinum award.
"Good Girl" was her second single, released in February 2011. It debuted at number six on the UK Singles Chart. This gave Alexis her second top-10 hit in the UK. It also became her second number one song on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart. "Hush Hush" was released as the album's third single in May 2011.

It was written by Sia and produced by Stargate. The music video for "Acid Rain" was released in February 2014. However, the song did not become a hit. After this, Alexis was no longer with Jay-Z's Roc Nation label.
Music Style
Alexis Jordan's first album featured dance-pop, pop, and R&B music. She described her music style as "versatile." She said she didn't want to be limited to just one type of music. She could sing pop, R&B/soul, ballads, and even hip-hop style songs. Alexis called her album's genre "universal." She explained that it wasn't just a pop dance record. It also had a bit of reggae and hip-hop, making it a mix of everything.
