A Look Back: History of Alfords Point

The name Alfords Point comes from Jane Alford. She owned 50 acres (about 200,000 square metres) of land near here in 1828. Originally, "Alford" was the name for a public park area by the Georges River.

How the Area Grew

The Sutherland Shire was officially created in 1906. At first, its western border reached what is now Menai. In 1922, the shire borders were changed to include areas like Illawong and Alfords Point. Before this, Alfords Point was part of the Municipality of Hurstville. Modern Alfords Point started to grow in the late 1970s and 1980s. Large areas of bushland were divided into blocks for new houses.

The Alfords Point Bridge

The Alfords Point Bridge was built across the Georges River. This bridge connects the Sutherland Shire with the Canterbury-Bankstown area. It links Alfords Point with Padstow Heights. The first bridge opened on 7 September 1973 and had three lanes. A second bridge was built next to it, opening on 22 August 2008. This made it possible to have three lanes going north and three lanes going south.

Bushfires in the Area

Alfords Point has faced bushfires over the years. One of the most well-known events was the 1994 Eastern seaboard fires. These fires sadly destroyed many homes in the area, especially those close to the Georges River National Park. Other bushfires happened in the summers of 1997–98 and 2001–2002. However, less property was damaged then. This was because of better ways to prevent bushfires after the 1993–94 disaster.
