Alfred Znamierowski (born June 21, 1940 – died October 23, 2019) was a talented Polish artist and writer. He was an expert in flags (this is called vexillology) and coats of arms (this is called heraldry). Alfred Znamierowski was born in Warsaw, Poland, in June 1940. He studied geography at the University of Warsaw.
His Work in Radio and Design
In 1965, Alfred left Poland. From 1966 to 1978, he worked as an editor for the Polish Service of Radio Free Europe in Munich, Germany. This radio station shared news and information with people in Poland.
In 1978, he moved to the United States. He started The Flag Design Center in San Diego, California. He worked closely with other famous experts. These included Ottfried Neubecker, a German expert on coats of arms, and Whitney Smith, an American flag expert.
Znamierowski created thousands of drawings of coats of arms and flags. These drawings were used in books and encyclopedias in Germany, the United States, and Poland. For many years, he was the main artist for the Flag Bulletin. This was a magazine published by Whitney Smith, who called Znamierowski "the best flag artist in the world."
Alfred Znamierowski was a very important person in the world of flags. He started writing articles about flags in the 1960s. Thousands of his drawings were printed in encyclopedias, books, and magazines. He also designed flags and coats of arms for businesses and individuals. Later Life and Achievements

In 1994, he returned to Poland. In 1997, he started the Instytut Heraldyczno-Weksylologiczny. This means the Institute of Heraldry and Vexillology. It became a member of the International Federation of Vexillological Associations (FIAV).
In 2001, FIAV made Znamierowski a Fellow of the Federation. This is a special honor. In 2005, he received the highest award for flag experts, called the Vexillon. He earned this award for helping to promote the study of flags.
Znamierowski was also a member of the Heraldic Commission. This group worked with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration in Warsaw. He was best known for his knowledge of flags and coats of arms. However, he was also a leader in groups like POMOST and Solidarność Walcząca. These groups worked hard for Poland to become independent from 1981 to 1990.
He received several awards for his work. In 2007, he was given the Golden Cross of Merit. In 2016, he received the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Cross of Fighting Solidarity.
