A Look at Alfredo Mayo's Life and Career
Alfredo Mayo first studied medicine. But his real passion was acting! In 1929, he started his acting journey in the theater. He joined a theater group led by Ernesto Vilches.
During the Spanish Civil War, he was part of the aviation forces. After the war, he became well-known for acting in films that supported the government at the time. Some of these films included Escuadrilla (1941), Harka (1941), and A mí la legión (1942). He is perhaps most famous for his role in Raza (1942). The story for this film was written by Francisco Franco himself, using the pen name Jaime de Andrade.
Alfredo Mayo quickly became a big star in Spanish cinema. He acted in many different types of movies. These included fun comedies, serious dramas, and exciting historical films. Some of his popular movies from this time were Malvaloca (1942) and Deliciosamente tontos (1943). He also starred in La leona de Castilla (1951).
In the 1950s, he often played supporting roles. This means he was not the main character, but still an important part of the film. You can see him in movies like El último cuplé (1957) and Una muchachita de Valladolid (1958). He even appeared in the big international film 55 Days at Peking (1963). This movie was filmed in Spain and directed by Nicholas Ray.
Alfredo Mayo's career had a second successful period in the 1960s. This happened when he worked with the famous director Carlos Saura. They made two important films together: La Caza (1966) and Peppermint Frappé (1967). These movies helped him gain new recognition.
He continued acting in over 175 films until he passed away. Some of his later works include El bosque del lobo (1970) and Patrimonio Nacional (1980). In the movie Los cántabros (1980), he played a druid, a type of ancient priest. He also appeared in Bearn o la sala de las muñecas (1982). Besides films, he starred in the TV series Cañas y barro for Televisión Española.
