Alfredo Ernesto Poveda Burbano (born January 24, 1926 – died June 7, 1990) was an important leader in Ecuador. He served as the Interim President of Ecuador from January 11, 1976, to August 10, 1979. He was an admiral in the Ecuadorian Navy before becoming president.

Early Life and Education

Alfredo Poveda was born in Ambato, Ecuador, on January 24, 1926. He went to Mejía High School in Quito. After that, he studied at the Naval Superior School "Comandante Rafael Morán Valverde." He also graduated from the National School of Nautical Studies Manuel Belgrano in Argentina. To further his education, he attended military academies in Argentina, Brazil, and the United States.

Naval Career

Poveda began his career in the Ecuadorian navy. He was promoted to a special role called naval attache. This meant he represented Ecuador's navy in Western European countries. Later, he became the commander of the First Naval Zone. He also led the Marine Infantry Battalion.

Leading Ecuador

In 1976, Alfredo Poveda became president as part of a military government. He was appointed by a group called the Supreme Council of Government. He led the country with two other military members: General Guillermo Durán Arcentales from the Army and General Luis Leoro Franco from the Air Force. This group of three leaders is sometimes called a triumvirate.

Return to Democracy

The military government, including Poveda, worked on a plan to bring back democratic rule. They wanted the people to choose their leaders again. This plan led to a special vote called a referendum in 1978. People voted on a new constitution. This new constitution was approved and was seen as a modern and fair document.

After the new constitution was adopted, general elections were held in 1979. Many political parties took part. A lawyer named Jaime Roldós Aguilera was elected as the new President of Ecuador. This marked the return to a civilian government.

Government Actions

During the military government, there were strict controls on public protests. For example, in October 1977, there was a strike by sugar workers at a place called El Aztra. The government took strong action to end the strike. Also, in the same year, the government changed some land reform policies. This meant that ongoing land disputes were often decided in favor of the landowners.

Later Life and Death

After Ecuador returned to a democratic system, Admiral Poveda retired from public life. He moved to Guayaquil, Ecuador. He passed away on June 7, 1990, in Miami, Florida. He was traveling back to Ecuador after attending a conference in Russia when he suffered a heart attack.
