Guillermo Antonio Rodríguez Lara (born 4 November 1923), often called "Bombita", is a former political and military leader from Ecuador. He was the leader of Ecuador from February 15, 1972, to January 11, 1976.
Life and Leadership
Guillermo Rodríguez Lara was born in Pujilí, Cotopaxi, on November 4, 1923. He studied at the School of the Americas in Panama. There, he learned about military planning and management.
As the commander of the Ecuadorian Army, he led a military takeover. This event, known as the El Carnavalazo coup, happened in 1972. He took power from President José María Velasco Ibarra, who then went to live in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
During his time as leader, Ecuador used money from its oil reserves. This money helped build many important things. New hospitals and schools were constructed. Roads were improved, including paving the main road between Quito and Tulcán. A new oil refinery was also built in Esmeraldas. The country's armed forces also received new equipment.
In 1976, the Ecuadorian military removed him from power.
Rodríguez Lara turned 100 years old on November 4, 2023. He is now known as the oldest living former state leader in the world.
