Ali Habib Mahmud (Arabic: علي حبيب محمود; born 1 January 1939 – died 20 March 2020) was a Syrian military officer. He served as Syria's Minister of Defense from June 2009 to August 2011. He was known as one of Syria's important generals. He was also close to President Bashar al-Assad.
Early Life and Education
Mahmud was born on 1 January 1939 in Tartus, Syria. His family belonged to the Alawite group. He joined the army in 1959. In 1962, he finished his studies at the military academy.
Military Career
Mahmud took part in several important conflicts. He fought in the 1973 October War against Israel. He also led Syrian forces against Israeli troops in Lebanon in 1982. This included a battle called the Battle of Sultan Yacoub.
In 1985, he commanded the 7th mechanized infantry division. A year later, in 1986, Mahmud became a general. He also joined the international forces in the Gulf War in 1990. This war helped free Kuwait from Saddam Hussein's Iraq.
In 1994, he was put in charge of the special forces. He was promoted to major general in 1998. In 2002, he became the deputy chief of staff. On 12 May 2004, he was named the chief of general staff for the Syrian army. He took over this role from Hasan Turkmani. Mahmud was also a member of the Baath Party.
On 3 June 2009, President Bashar al-Assad chose Mahmud to be the Minister of Defense. He replaced Hasan Turkmani again in this position. Mahmud's time as defense minister ended on 8 August 2011. Dawoud Rajha then took over the role.
In 2013, some news sources wrongly said that Mahmud had left Syria. However, he actually stayed in Syria.
Travel Restrictions
In May 2011, the United States put travel restrictions on Ali Habib Mahmud. This meant he could not travel to the U.S. and his assets there were frozen. These actions were taken due to concerns raised about his actions.
Death
Ali Habib Mahmud passed away on 20 March 2020. He died in Al Assad University Hospital in Damascus, Syria.
