Alice Florence Clarissa Merton (born on September 13, 1993) is a talented singer and songwriter. She has German, Irish, and Canadian roots and is based in the UK. Alice became very famous with her first song, "No Roots". In 2017, she released her first collection of songs, called an EP, also named No Roots. Her first full album, Mint, came out in 2019, and her second album, S.I.D.E.S., was released in 2022.

Alice Merton's Early Life
Alice Merton was born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1993. Her mother is German, and her father was born in Ireland. Because her dad worked as a mining consultant, Alice's family moved around a lot.
When she was just three months old, Alice moved to Connecticut in the United States. Soon after, they moved to Oakville, Ontario, Canada. She grew up there until she was thirteen. During this time, she learned to play classical piano and sing.
After Canada, her family moved to Munich, Germany. This move helped Alice learn German. She could finally talk with her German grandmother, whom she had only seen once a year before. While in Germany, Alice wrote her very first song. She went to a German high school before moving to England.
Alice lived in many different cities as a child. These included Oakville, Ontario, Connecticut, New York, Munich, Bournemouth, London, and Berlin. She feels connected to Canada, England, Germany, and France, where her mother lived. In 2013, she began studying at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg in Mannheim. She earned a degree in writing and composing songs. There, she also met the people who would become her bandmates.
Alice Merton's Music Career
2015-2017: Finding Success with "No Roots"
Alice Merton first gained attention in 2015. She wrote and sang songs for Fahrenhaidt's album, The Book of Nature. In November 2016, she won an award in Hamburg for new talented artists in the "Acoustic Pop" category.
After moving to Berlin, Alice and her manager, Paul Grauwinkel, started their own record label. They called it Paper Plane Records International. They released the song "No Roots" at the end of 2016. The song's words were inspired by how Alice felt. She often felt like she didn't have one true home.
This song quickly became very popular. It reached number one on music charts like Hype Machine and Spotify's Global Viral 50. Many radio stations started playing it. The song was also used in an episode of the TV show The Blacklist.
Because of its success, Alice officially released her first EP, No Roots, on February 3, 2017. The song "No Roots" became number one in France. It was also number two in Germany and number three in Austria. It even reached number one on US alternative radio charts. Vodafone Germany used the song in one of their TV commercials. In August 2017, Alice signed with Mom + Pop Music to help promote her music in the United States. On August 2, 2017, she released her second song, Hit the Ground Running.
She performed at the Life Ball in Vienna in June 2017. She spent the rest of the year touring Germany. She opened for other artists like Bosse and Philipp Poisel. At the end of 2017, she won the 2018 European Border Breakers Award. This award celebrates new artists who have found success outside their home country.
2018-2020: Releasing Her First Album, Mint
On September 7, 2018, Alice Merton released "Why So Serious". This was the first song from her first full album, Mint. She released two more songs before the album came out on January 18, 2019. The second official song, "Funny Business", was released on November 30. Its music video came out on January 9. On that same day, she also released a new song from the album called "Homesick".
Alice also sang a duet with British singer-songwriter Tom Odell. Their song, "Half As Good As You", was released on September 28, 2018.
In February 2019, Alice released the first part of a documentary. It showed how she made her Mint album. She also announced a concert tour in the USA for April 2019.
In 2019, Alice Merton became a coach on the TV show The Voice of Germany. She was the first female coach to win the show with her team member, Claudia Emmanuela Santoso.
On October 18, 2019, Alice released her album Mint again. This new version included four extra songs: "Back To Berlin", "PCH", "Easy", and "Keeps Me Awake". In early 2020, she toured across Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, and Denmark. She sang both her new songs and those from her earlier album.
2021-Present: The S.I.D.E.S. Album
On April 8, 2021, Alice Merton released "Vertigo". On September 9, she released "Hero" and "Island". Both of these songs are from her second album, S.I.D.E.S.. She announced the album's name on February 23, 2022, and shared its list of 15 songs. Six of these songs had already been released.
Alice also shared a video on TikTok announcing her next song, "Same Team", would be released on March 4, 2022. Later in April 2022, she released another song called "Blindside". Her song "Love Back" came out in May 2022.
Alice has been touring with the British band Bastille on their "Give me the Future" American tour. In 2022, she also performed in seven different countries across Europe for her own S.I.D.E.S. tour.
Her album S.I.D.E.S. was officially released on June 17.
