Relationship with Her Uncle
In an interview in 2008, Alina said she felt closer to her uncle, Raúl Castro, than to her father. Raúl Castro later became the president of Cuba after her father.
Alina mentioned that her uncle Raúl helped her many times. She said, "He was the person to whom you could go to and ask for help every time you had a practical problem." She added that he always helped her quickly. In her family, she felt he was the only one who could offer practical help, while her father was not helpful with these kinds of issues.
Disagreement Over a Book
Alina Fernández wrote a book about her life. Her aunt, Juanita Castro, had a disagreement with Alina about some parts of the book. These parts were about Juanita and Fidel's parents, Ángel Castro and Lina Ruz.
In 2005, a court in Spain made a decision about this disagreement. The court asked Alina and the book's publisher to pay money to Juanita Castro. Juanita said that people should not "offend Fidel's family."
An English version of the book was published with the title Castro's Daughter: An Exile's Memoir of Cuba. This version did not include the parts that caused the disagreement.
