All Saints' Church (which means Iglesia de Todos los Santos in Spanish) opened in 1890. It is a Church of England church located in the city of Puerto de la Cruz. This city is on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain.
How the Church Started
The first groups of Anglicans (people who follow the Church of England) arrived in the Canary Islands a long time ago. They mostly settled in cities like Puerto de la Cruz, Las Palmas, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
In Puerto de la Cruz, Anglican church services first took place at the home of the British Vice-Consul, Peter Spence Reid. A Vice-Consul is an official who helps citizens of their country in a foreign land. Even though he was a Presbyterian (another type of Christian), he welcomed the Anglicans.
In 1887, Peter Spence Reid started a company called the Taoro Company. That same year, this company set aside some land for free. This land was meant for building an Anglican church. In November 1887, a bishop named Ernest Graham Ingham visited Puerto de la Cruz. He helped create a group to start the church building project.
The church was built using money donated by visitors and British people living in the city. Many parts of the church, like the organ, the pulpit (where sermons are given), and the stained glass windows, were gifts from individuals. The house for the church's leader and some stained glass windows were gifts from Mary Boreham and her family. The church is built in a style called Gothic Revival, which looks like old medieval churches.
All Saints' Church in Puerto de la Cruz was the very first Anglican church built in the Canary Islands. Puerto de la Cruz also has the oldest Anglican cemetery in the islands. In 1964, the church became part of the Anglican Diocese of Gibraltar.
The Church Today
Today, Anglican worship services are held every Sunday at 11:00 AM. There is also a service on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 AM. All Saints' Church now serves all of northern Tenerife. It also covers the main city area of the island and the island of La Palma. In the south of Tenerife, there is another Anglican church called the Anglican Church of St. Francis, South Tenerife.
