The Church's Story
Early Anglican Communities
The first groups of Anglicans who came to the Canary Islands settled in a few main cities. These included Puerto de la Cruz, Las Palmas, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. A smaller group also settled in Santa Cruz de La Palma.
In Puerto de la Cruz, Anglican church services first took place every Sunday. They were held at the home of the British Vice-Consul, Peter Spence Reid. Even though he was a Presbyterian and a member of the Church of Scotland, he helped the Anglican community.
Building the Church
In 1887, Peter Spence Reid started the Taoro Company. In the same year, this company set aside land for free. This land was meant for building an Anglican church.
In November 1887, a bishop named Ernest Graham Ingham visited Puerto de la Cruz. He was the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Sierra Leone. Bishop Ingham helped create a committee to start the church building project.
The church was built using money donated by visitors from other countries. British people living in the city also gave money. Many items inside the church were also gifts. These included the organ, the pulpit, and the stained glass windows. The baptismal font was also a private donation.
The house for the clergy (church leaders) and some stained glass windows were gifts from Mary Boreham. She was the widow of Walter Long Boreham, who had passed away in 1890. The church is built in a style called Gothic Revival. This style looks like older Gothic churches.
A First for the Canary Islands
All Saints' Church in Puerto de la Cruz was the very first Anglican church built in the Canary Islands. Puerto de la Cruz also has the oldest Anglican cemetery in the islands. In 1964, the church became part of the Anglican Diocese of Gibraltar.
All Saints' Today
Services and Reach
Today, Anglican services are held every Sunday at 11:00 AM. These are sung services. There is also a quieter service every Wednesday at 10:00 AM.
The parish of All Saints' Church now serves a large area. It covers all of northern Tenerife. It also includes the main city area of the island. The church's reach even extends to the island of La Palma.
In the south of Tenerife, there is another Anglican church. This is the Anglican Church of St. Francis, South Tenerife. It is located in the area of Adeje.
