A Special Church Design
This church is famous because it was designed by a very important architect named G F Bodley. It also has beautiful stained glass windows made by William Morris and his company, Morris & Co..
Samuel Marling, whose family owned mills nearby, asked Bodley to design the church. Samuel lived right next to where the church was built.
The Unique Tower
The church has a unique tower that looks like a 'saddleback'. This style comes from old French Gothic architecture. It was a big inspiration for Bodley's early designs.
The church was built between 1861 and 1862. Local workers and builders helped construct it. For example, Harrison of King's Stanley were the main builders. Joshua Wall carved the stone, William English did the woodwork, and T.J. Chew created the ironwork.
Another idea for the tower came from a church in Marling, South Tyrol. Samuel Marling had visited this place in the 1860s.
Inside the Church
Bodley designed many parts of the church himself. He created the pews (church benches) and choir-stalls. These have special carvings like poppy-heads and fleur de lys.
He also designed the font (for baptisms), the marble pulpit (where sermons are given), and the communion rails. Even the ironwork on the doors shows how much attention Bodley paid to every detail.
Amazing Stained Glass
The stained glass windows are truly amazing. Bodley was a friend of William Morris. He gave Morris & Co. their very first job to create church stained glass at Selsley.
Philip Webb planned the design for all the windows in the church. He also designed the detailed "Creation" window at the west end. Other famous artists like Edward Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Ford Madox Brown also helped create these beautiful windows.
The church is highly rated in a famous book called England's Thousand Best Churches by Simon Jenkins.
The Church Organ
All Saints Church has a pipe organ built by Nicholson in 1862. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
The Churchyard
The churchyard is the area around the church. It contains war graves for two soldiers. One soldier died during World War I and the other during World War II.
