Discovering the Jeweled Onion

Where Does the Jeweled Onion Grow?

This special onion likes to grow in tough soils that have lots of rock and clay. You can find it in the California Coast Ranges in central and northern California. It grows from a place called Merced County all the way up to Humboldt County.

What Does the Jeweled Onion Look Like?

The Allium serra plant grows from a small bulb, which is like a tiny underground onion. This bulb is usually about one centimeter wide and has a cool herringbone pattern.

It sends up a long stem. At the top of this stem, it has a tightly packed bunch of flowers. This bunch is called an umbel. The flowers are a beautiful bright pink color. They are shaped like tiny thimbles or bells. When they first open, they often look shimmery or iridescent. As they get older, they become thin and papery.
