In May 2015, Almaz ran her fastest 5000 metres race yet in Shanghai, China. Her time of 14:14.32 made her the third fastest woman ever at that distance. Only her fellow Ethiopians, Tirunesh Dibaba and Meseret Defar, had run faster.

At the World Championships in Beijing in August, Almaz showed incredible strength. She led the 5000 metres final from the start and won with a new championship record. She finished more than 17 seconds ahead of the silver medalist. Her win was even called the "Performance of the Championships."

Olympic Glory and World Record: 2016

Almaz started her 2016 season strong, winning a 3000 metres race in May. In June, she set a new personal best in the 5000 metres in Rome, making her the second fastest woman ever at that distance. Later that month, she ran her first competitive 10,000 metres race. She set the fastest debut time ever for the event.
