Almond Joy is a delicious candy bar made by The Hershey Company. It's filled with sweet, shredded coconut and topped with whole almonds. All of this is covered in smooth chocolate.

Hershey's also makes Mounds bars. Mounds are similar to Almond Joy but don't have nuts. They are covered in dark chocolate. Both bars have a similar look, but Almond Joy uses blue packaging, and Mounds uses red.

The Story of Almond Joy

How Peter Paul Started

The Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company began in 1919. Six Armenian immigrants, including Peter Paul Halajian, started it. They wanted to make tasty treats for everyone.

Mounds Bar Joins the Family

In 1929, Peter Paul bought the Mounds bar from another candy maker. Mounds became very popular, especially during World War II. By 1944, the U.S. military bought 80% of all Mounds bars made! They used them in soldiers' food packs.

Almond Joy is Born

The Almond Joy bar was first made in 1946. It replaced an older candy bar called Dreams Bar. Dreams Bar had diced almonds and coconut covered in dark chocolate. Almond Joy was named by an employee named Anna Z. Ranaudo.

Hershey's Takes Over

In 1978, Peter Paul joined with a company from England called Cadbury-Schweppes. Later, in 1988, Hershey's bought the rights to many of their chocolate candies in the U.S. This included Mounds, Almond Joy, and York Peppermint Pattie bars. Hershey's paid $300 million for these popular brands.

Where Almond Joy is Made

For almost 20 years, Almond Joy bars were made in Naugatuck, Connecticut. In 2007, the making of the candy bars moved to a newer factory. This new factory is in Stuarts Draft, Virginia.

Fun Advertising

The Famous Jingle

In the 1970s, Peter Paul used a very famous song to advertise Almond Joy and Mounds. The song went, "Sometimes you feel like a nut / Sometimes you don't." Joey Levine wrote this catchy jingle.

TV Commercials

The first TV commercial with this song aired in January 1977. The "feel like a nut" part of the song often showed someone doing something silly or unusual. For example, you might see a person riding a horse backward! This made the commercials memorable and fun.

Different Kinds of Almond Joy

New Flavors to Try

In the 2000s, Hershey's started making different versions of Almond Joy.

  • In 2004, they had limited-edition Piña Colada and Double Chocolate Almond Joy.
  • In 2005, they released White Chocolate Key Lime and Milk Chocolate Passion Fruit Almond Joy.
  • In 2006, they offered a Toasted Coconut Almond Joy.

Almond Joy Pieces

In 2009, Hershey's introduced Almond Joy Pieces. These were small candies, like M&Ms. They had coconut, milk chocolate, and almonds inside. They came in brown, white, and blue colors. Even though people liked them, Almond Joy Pieces were later stopped. Only Reese's Pieces are still sold today from that line.
