Mounds is a yummy candy bar made by The Hershey Company. It's filled with sweet, shredded coconut and covered in rich dark chocolate.

You might know its "sister" candy bar, the Almond Joy. Almond Joy is similar but has whole almonds on top and is covered in milk chocolate. Mounds and Almond Joy look alike, but Mounds uses a red wrapper, and Almond Joy uses blue.

The Story of Mounds

Mounds candy bar was first created in 1920 by a candy maker named Vincent Nitido. He lived in West Haven, Connecticut. Back then, it was just one piece and cost only 5 cents!

In 1929, the Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company bought the Mounds candy bar. They changed it to have two pieces, but it still cost 5 cents. After World War II, the price went up to 10 cents. For a while, Mounds was even made with milk chocolate!

Mounds During World War II

During World War II, it was hard for Peter Paul to get sugar and coconut. These ingredients usually came from the Philippines. To solve this problem, the company started getting coconut from the Caribbean.

They even used their own small ships to bring the coconut to the United States! These seven ships were called the "Flea Fleet." They were small enough to avoid being noticed by German ships during the war. This helped Peter Paul keep making Mounds candy bars. To make sure Mounds stayed high quality, the company stopped making some of its other candies.

Over the years, Peter Paul added more popular candies to its family. These included the Almond Joy bar in 1946 and York Peppermint Patties in 1940.

Who Owns Mounds Now?

In 1978, Peter Paul Company joined with another company called Cadbury. Then, in 1988, Hershey Foods bought the U.S. part of the company.

Mounds, Almond Joy, and other Peter Paul candies were made in Naugatuck, Connecticut, for many years. This started in the early 1920s. In 1950, Peter Paul built a bigger factory there. Even after Hershey bought the brands, they kept making Mounds and Almond Joy in Naugatuck until 2007. Then, the candy making moved to a newer factory in Stuarts Draft, Virginia.

In 2006, a special Mounds Island Orange candy bar was made. It had orange-colored and orange-flavored coconut. But it was only available for a short time.

How Mounds is Advertised

Mounds has a famous slogan: "Indescribably Delicious." This slogan was created after Mounds held a contest to find the best two words to sell the candy. A person named Leon Weiss won $10 for coming up with it! Mounds still uses this slogan today on its wrappers and in ads.

Mounds and Almond Joy are often advertised together. Mounds has its red packaging, while Almond Joy has blue. In the 1970s, a popular jingle helped people remember the difference between the two candies. It went like this: "Sometimes you feel like a nut / sometimes you don't / Almond Joy's got nuts / Mounds don't."
