It's similar to Mounds but has whole almonds and is covered in milk chocolate. Mounds and Almond Joy look alike, but Mounds has red packaging, and Almond Joy has blue.

The Story of Mounds Candy

How Mounds Began

A candy maker named Vincent Nitido first created Mounds in West Haven, Connecticut. This was back in 1920. At first, it was one piece and cost only 5 cents.

In 1929, a company called Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company bought the Mounds candy line. They started making it themselves. They changed the candy to have two pieces, but it still cost 5 cents. After World War II, the price went up to 10 cents. For a while, Mounds was even made with milk chocolate!

Mounds During World War II

During World War II, it was hard for Peter Paul to get sugar and coconut. Coconut usually came from the Philippines. To solve this, the company started getting coconut from the Caribbean. They even used their own small ships to bring the coconut to the United States. These seven ships were called the "Flea Fleet." They were small enough to avoid being noticed by German ships. This way, Peter Paul could keep making Mounds candy bars during the war.

To keep the quality high, Peter Paul stopped making some of their less popular candies. They focused mostly on the Mounds bar. Over the years, Peter Paul added more candies. These included the Almond Joy candy bar in 1946 and York Peppermint Patties in 1940.

Changes in Ownership

In 1978, Cadbury and Peter Paul joined together. Then, in 1988, Hershey Foods bought Peter Paul's operations in the U.S.

Where Mounds Was Made

Mounds, Almond Joy, and other Peter Paul candies were made in Naugatuck, Connecticut. This was from the early 1920s until 2007. In 1950, Peter Paul built a bigger factory in Naugatuck. After Hershey bought the brands in 1988, they kept making Mounds and Almond Joy there.

However, in 2007, Hershey moved the candy making to a newer factory. This new factory is in Stuarts Draft, Virginia.

Special Edition Mounds

In 2006, a special Mounds candy bar came out. It was called Mounds Island Orange. This bar had orange-colored and orange-flavored coconut. But it was only available for a short time.

How Mounds Is Advertised

Famous Slogans

Mounds' first slogan was "Indescribably Delicious." This slogan came from a contest. Mounds asked people to come up with the best two words to sell the candy. Leon Weiss won $10 for his idea! Peter Paul officially registered this slogan in 1965. Mounds still uses this slogan today on its wrappers and in ads.

Advertising Together

Mounds and Almond Joy are often advertised together. They have similar packaging designs. Mounds uses red, and Almond Joy uses blue. In the 1970s, a famous jingle was used for both candies. It went, "Sometimes you feel like a nut / sometimes you don't / Almond Joy's got nuts / Mounds don't." Joey Levine wrote this catchy song.
