Early Life and School
Aloysius Pang was born in Singapore on August 24, 1990. He had two older brothers, Jefferson and Kenny. He went to Pei Chun Public School and Yuying Secondary School. In 2012, he earned a diploma in management studies from the Singapore Institute of Management University.
Aloysius Pang's Acting Journey
Aloysius started acting when he was just nine years old. He joined an acting class run by Mediacorp. He appeared in children's TV shows like My Teacher, My Buddy (1999) and A Child's Hope (2003, 2004). He was even nominated for a Young Talent Award in 2003 for his role in A Child's Hope.
He stopped acting in 2004 because he was being bullied. He later said he told Mediacorp not to call him for roles anymore.
Returning to Acting
In 2012, Aloysius came back to acting. He played a main role in the movie Timeless Love. In 2014, he also directed his first music video for singer Gavin Teo's song I Understand.
That same year, he was named one of the 8 Dukes of Caldecott Hill. This is a group of popular young male actors from Mediacorp. He won the Best Newcomer award at the Star Awards 2015.
In 2015, Aloysius released his first song called "Black Tears." He also starred in Singapore's first movie about cosplay, Young & Fabulous. He was known for being very kind to the people who worked behind the scenes on his shows. He would set aside 10 percent of his pay to thank them.
Later Career and Final Roles
In 2017, Aloysius shared that he would not renew his contract with Mediacorp. He wanted to focus on a business he started with his brother. The company was called Kairos Green and worked with wood plastic composite.
In 2018, he acted in a TV series called From Beijing to Moscow. For this show, he went on a two-month road trip through China, Mongolia, and Russia.
Aloysius was supposed to play his first main role in the Channel 8 drama My One In a Million in 2019. However, he passed away before filming began. Another actor, Lawrence Wong, took over his role.
In 2022, a film called The Antique Shop was released in Thailand. It included scenes that Aloysius had filmed before his death. This was his last work to be shown.
Personal Life
Aloysius Pang was in a relationship with actress Jayley Woo. They had planned to share their relationship with the public after they got married.
His Passing
On January 19, 2019, Aloysius was taking part in a military training exercise in New Zealand. He was an Operationally Ready National Serviceman. He went into a military vehicle called a Singapore Self-Propelled Howitzer to fix a problem.
While he was inside, the gun barrel of the howitzer automatically moved down. Aloysius was in the way and suffered serious injuries to his chest and stomach. He was taken to the hospital by helicopter. Despite having surgery, his condition got worse. He was put on life support.
Aloysius Pang passed away at the hospital on January 24, 2019. He was 28 years old. His body was brought back to Singapore the next day.
Aftermath and Tributes
Aloysius's death led to many people talking about safety in military training. The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said that he was the first soldier to be injured this way with that type of vehicle.
After his death, MINDEF paused all Army training to review safety. They also set up a special committee to investigate what happened. Aloysius was given a higher military rank after his passing, becoming a Corporal First Class.
MINDEF also announced that they would create a new Inspector-General Office (IGO). This office would make sure that safety rules are followed at all levels of the military.
On May 6, 2019, the findings from the investigation were shared. It was found that the gun barrel was lowered without making sure everyone was safe. Aloysius did not move away as he should have, and two other servicemen did not use the emergency stop buttons. The investigation said that the accident could have been prevented if safety rules were followed.
Later, the two servicemen involved were charged in a military court. They pleaded guilty and were fined. Aloysius's family asked for a light sentence for them, saying, "One loss is enough."
Remembering Aloysius
Many people paid tribute to Aloysius Pang. A special video was shown on Channel 8 on January 31, 2019. At the Star Awards 2019 ceremony, performers sang a song while videos of Aloysius were shown. This was a way to remember his contributions to the entertainment industry.
