Alpena Township, officially known as the Charter Township of Alpena, is a special type of local government area. It is located in Alpena County in the U.S. state of Michigan. In 2020, about 9,116 people lived here.

The city of Alpena is surrounded by the township. However, the city and the township are managed separately. Alpena Township is the fourth-largest township in Northern Michigan based on its population. It's the biggest one outside Grand Traverse County.

Lakewood Community

Lakewood is a small, unincorporated community in Alpena Township. It is found along US 23 on the northeast side of Long Lake. This area started as a summer vacation spot around 1912.

Geography and Natural Features

Land and Water Areas

Alpena Township covers a total area of about 141.21 square miles (365.7 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 104.45 square miles (270.5 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 36.76 square miles (95.2 square kilometers), is water.

This water includes parts of Lake Huron near the shore. It also has several inland lakes and a section of the Thunder Bay River.

Long Lake and Middle Island

Half of Long Lake is located in the northern part of the township. Off the northeast shore of the township is Middle Island. This island is home to the Middle Island Light, a historic lighthouse. The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

According to the 2000 census, there were 9,788 people living in Alpena Township. These people lived in 4,037 households, with 2,858 of them being families. Most of the people living here were White (98.39%).

About 28.9% of households had children under 18 living with them. Many households (58.8%) were married couples living together. About 25.0% of all households were made up of individuals living alone.
