This plant grows naturally in cold, mountainous, and subarctic areas. You can find it in places like Scandinavia and Greenland. In North America, it lives in Alaska and the Canadian Arctic. It also grows high up in the Rocky Mountains, reaching south into Montana and Wyoming.
