Alta Peak is a cool mountain located in Sequoia National Park in California. It's not far from the famous Giant Forest, which is home to giant sequoia trees! Standing tall at 11,208 feet (about 3,416 meters), it's a popular spot for hikers.

About Alta Peak

Alta Peak is part of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It's known for its amazing views of the surrounding park. Many people enjoy hiking to the top to see the beautiful scenery.

A Changing Name

For a while, before 1896, this mountain was actually called Tharps Peak. But by 1903, most people started calling it Alta Peak. This new name was officially recognized in 1928. The Sierra Club, a group that cares about nature, even said the name Alta Peak sounded "euphonious," which means it sounded pleasant!

Exploring the Area

Near Alta Peak, you'll find a lovely place called Alta Meadow. This meadow is on the southern side of the mountain and has been known by its name for a long time.

There's also a rocky spot called Tharps Rock, which is about half a mile (0.8 km) southwest of the peak's summit. This name honors Hale Tharp. He was one of the first European Americans to explore the Giant Forest area.

Tharp's Log

Hale Tharp had a summer camp inside a hollowed-out giant sequoia log. This special log, near Crescent Meadow, is known as Tharp's Log. It's a very popular and interesting place for visitors to Sequoia National Park to see today!

Reaching the Summit

The first recorded climb to the top of Alta Peak was in 1896. It was done by a person named William R. Dudley. The easiest way to reach the summit is by hiking. It's considered a hike that most experienced hikers can do.
