History of Altamont
Altamont began in 1879 when a railroad was built through the area. The very first settlers were the Huston family. Today, one of the streets in Altamont is named after them.
When the Huston family traveled to the nearby town of Oswego, people would ask where they lived. They would say "about a mile east of the lone tree." This single tree was a famous landmark because there weren't many trees in Kansas back then! The city was named after another town called Altamont, Illinois. Altamont officially became a city in 1884.
Geography and Climate
Altamont is located at 37°11′23″N 95°17′37″W / 37.18972°N 95.29361°W. It covers a total area of about 1.66 square miles (4.30 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a very small part being water.

Education in Altamont
The public schools in Altamont are part of the Labette County USD 506 school district. The main school office is in Altamont.
Labette County High School is also in Altamont. Its mascot is the Grizzlies, and their colors are red and gold. Before this district was formed, Altamont had its own high school.
Altamont Grade School serves students from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. After 8th grade, students go to Labette County High School. The Altamont Grade School mascot is the Eagles, and their colors are Navy and Columbia Blue.
