Altmarkkreis Salzwedel is a district in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It's a part of the Altmark region, known for its history and nature. The district's capital city is Salzwedel.

A Look Back in Time

The Altmarkkreis Salzwedel district is part of an older area called the Altmark. This region once included parts of the nearby Stendal area.

Early History

In the 10th century, the Altmark was the eastern edge of the Holy Roman Empire. This was a very large and powerful group of lands in Central Europe.

Medieval Times

Later, during the Late Middle Ages, many towns in the Altmark region joined the Hanseatic League. This was a strong group of trading cities that worked together to protect their businesses.

Modern District

The Altmarkkreis Salzwedel district we know today was created in 1994. It was formed by combining several older districts: Gardelegen, Klötze, Salzwedel, and a part of Osterburg.

What the Coat of Arms Means

A coat of arms is a special design that represents a place or a family. The coat of arms for Altmarkkreis Salzwedel tells a story about its past.
