A Look Back in Time
The Altmarkkreis Salzwedel district is part of an older area called the Altmark. This region once included parts of the nearby Stendal area.
Early History
In the 10th century, the Altmark was the eastern edge of the Holy Roman Empire. This was a very large and powerful group of lands in Central Europe.
Medieval Times
Later, during the Late Middle Ages, many towns in the Altmark region joined the Hanseatic League. This was a strong group of trading cities that worked together to protect their businesses.
Modern District
The Altmarkkreis Salzwedel district we know today was created in 1994. It was formed by combining several older districts: Gardelegen, Klötze, Salzwedel, and a part of Osterburg.
