Lüneburg is a cool city in northern Germany, located in a region called Lower Saxony. It's about 50 kilometers (31 miles) southeast of the big city of Hamburg. Lüneburg is the main city of the Lüneburg district. Around 102,660 people live here.
The Ilmenau River flows through Lüneburg. This river is a smaller stream that eventually flows into the larger Elbe River.
For a long time, Lüneburg was very rich because of its salt trade. In the Middle Ages, salt was like gold! It was moved along the Old Salt Route to the Baltic Sea. From there, ships carried it to other countries. Salt mines near the city were active for about a thousand years. However, salt mining stopped in 1980.
All that salt mining caused a lot of deforestation. This means many trees were cut down. Because of this, the area around Lüneburg changed into a special type of open land called heathland. This area is now known as the Lüneburg Heath (Lüneburger Heide).
Lüneburg is connected with Scunthorpe, a town in England. This is called being "twinned."
