Alton's History

Alton was first called East Orange. It was founded in 1875 when a railroad line reached that area. The name changed to Alton in 1882. Just one year later, in 1883, Alton officially became a city.

Alton also has Spalding Catholic School. This school serves elementary students. It used to have more campuses, but now all elementary grades are on one campus in Alton. Older students from Spalding Catholic now attend Gehlen Catholic School in LeMars.
