The Story Behind the Name
Alton wasn't always called Alton. Long ago, it was known as Pringles Mill. This name came from the Pringle family who lived there. They were descendants of two brothers, John and Samuel Pringle.
The Pringle Brothers' Adventure
The Pringle brothers are famous in West Virginia stories. They were part of a group of soldiers during a time when there was a big war called the French and Indian War. They decided to leave the army and found a very unusual home.
They lived inside a giant sycamore tree! This tree was their home for quite a while. In the fall of 1767, John Pringle traveled back to the South Branch Potomac River valley. There, he found out that the war was over. This meant they were no longer considered to have left the army without permission.
