Alvin Sargent (born April 12, 1927 – died May 9, 2019) was an American screenwriter. A screenwriter is a person who writes scripts for movies or TV shows. He was very good at his job!
Alvin Sargent won two Academy Awards for writing adapted screenplays. An adapted screenplay means he took a story from a book or play and turned it into a movie script. He won for the movies Julia (1977) and Ordinary People (1980).
He also wrote many other famous movies. Some of these include Paper Moon (1973), What About Bob? (1991), and several Spider-Man films. These Spider-Man movies were Spider-Man 2 (2004), Spider-Man 3 (2007), and The Amazing Spider-Man (2012).

Alvin Sargent was born Alvin Supowitz in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His parents were Esther and Isaac Supowitz. His family came from Russia.
He went to Upper Darby High School. When he was 17, he left school to join the Navy. Later, his name was added to the school's Wall of Fame. This is a special honor for successful former students.
Starting His Career
Alvin Sargent began writing for television in 1953. In the 1960s, he wrote episodes for popular TV shows. These included Route 66, Ben Casey, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.
His first movie script was for Gambit in 1966. He became well-known for his work on I Walk the Line (1970) and Paper Moon (1973). For Paper Moon, he won an award from the Writers Guild of America. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for it.
Winning Awards
Alvin Sargent won his first Academy Award in 1978. This was for the movie Julia. He won another Academy Award in 1981 for Ordinary People. These awards showed how talented he was at writing movie scripts.
He continued to work on many big films. He helped write the scripts for Spider-Man 2 in 2004 and Spider-Man 3 in 2007. He also worked on the script for the 2012 movie The Amazing Spider-Man.
Family Life
Alvin Sargent had a long relationship with a movie producer named Laura Ziskin. They got married in 2010. Sadly, Laura Ziskin passed away in 2011.
His brother was also a writer and producer named Herb Sargent.
Alvin Sargent died peacefully at his home in Seattle on May 9, 2019. He was 92 years old.
