Discovering Am Faochagach

What is Am Faochagach?

Am Faochagach is a mountain known for its rounded shape. It is not a sharp, pointy peak like some other mountains. Instead, it has a softer, more curved top. The name "Am Faochagach" comes from the Scottish Gaelic language.

Where is This Mountain?

This mountain is located in a wild and remote part of Scotland. It is part of the Northwest Highlands mountain range. This area is famous for its stunning landscapes and rugged beauty. Wester Ross is a region on the west coast of Scotland. It has many lochs (lakes), glens (valleys), and mountains.

Climbing Am Faochagach

The Journey to the Mountain

Getting to Am Faochagach can be a bit of an adventure. The land around the mountain is mostly open moorland. This means it is a wide, open area with low-growing plants. There are also many boggy (wet and marshy) parts. You might even need to cross a river to reach the mountain's base. These features can make the walk from the road quite tricky.

Reaching the Top

Even though the start of the journey can be challenging, climbing the mountain itself is simpler. Once you get past the wet moorland, the path up the mountain becomes easier. Reaching the summit offers amazing views of the surrounding Scottish Highlands. It is a rewarding experience for hikers.

Mountain Classifications

Am Faochagach is special because it belongs to two important lists of mountains in Scotland.

What is a Munro?

A Munro is a mountain in Scotland that is at least 3,000 feet (914.4 meters) high. There are 282 Munros in total. Climbing all of them is a popular challenge for hikers called "Munro bagging." Am Faochagach, at 953 meters, is tall enough to be a Munro.

What is a Marilyn?

A Marilyn is a hill or mountain in the British Isles that has a "prominence" of at least 150 meters (about 492 feet). Prominence means how much a mountain rises above the land around it. It is like how tall it is from its base, not just from sea level. Am Faochagach has a prominence of 367 meters. This makes it a Marilyn as well.
