Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ambroise de Loré (born 1396 at Château de Loré in Oisseau – died May 24, 1446, in Paris) was an important French military leader during the Hundred Years' War. He was the baron of Ivry in Normandy. He was also a close friend and fellow soldier of Joan of Arc.

Ambroise de Loré helped improve rules for businesses and police in Paris. He was also a guard for the main police force in Paris. From 1436 to 1446, he became the Provost of Paris, which was like being the head of the city's police and government. He fought in several major battles, including Agincourt, la Brossinière, the Siege of Orléans, and the Battle of Patay.

Life

Ambroise de Loré was born at the Château de Loré in Oisseau, a town in the Mayenne region of France. His first brave act in battle was at Agincourt in 1415. He supported the Armagnac group and became loyal to the Dauphin Charles, who would later become King Charles VII.

He continued to fight against the English in the Maine region. This went on until Joan of Arc arrived and changed the course of the war. Ambroise de Loré fought alongside Joan of Arc at Jargeau, Meung-sur-Loire, and the important Battle of Patay in 1429.

In the years that followed, he used his fortress at Saint-Céneri as a main base for his operations. From there, he captured an English leader named Matthew Gough near Vivoin in 1431. He even led a raid that reached the walls of Caen, where he took three thousand prisoners.

In 1433, Ambroise de Loré was captured himself. However, he was later exchanged for another important English leader, John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury. In 1435, he and Jean de Dunois defeated the English near Meulan. In 1436, he helped the Constable of France, Arthur de Richemont, force the English out of Paris.

In February 1437, he was officially named Provost of Paris. This was a very important role, similar to being the chief of police and a main city official. In 1438, he was also given the job of "judge and general reformer of people who broke the law in the kingdom." This meant he helped fix problems with crime and justice across France. He was present when the French took Meaux in 1439 and Pontoise in 1441. Ambroise de Loré passed away on May 24, 1446.
