Early Days and Sandalwood
Amelup has an interesting history. In the 1890s, the area was a busy place for the Sandalwood trade. People called cutters would collect sandalwood trees. These trees were valuable for their fragrant wood. A road in the town, called Sandalwood Road, reminds everyone of this past.
Settling the Land
Later, in 1928, the land around Amelup was opened for new settlers. This process was called "selection." Over 400 acres of land were given out to people. These settlers started new farms and homes in the area.
What People Do in Amelup Today
Today, most of the land around Amelup is used for farming. Farmers grow cereal crops like wheat and barley. They also raise sheep. Sheep are important for both their wool and their meat. This farming helps support the local community.
