America's Next Top Model (season 18) facts for kids

The eighteenth season of America's Next Top Model was called America's Next Top Model: British Invasion. It started on February 29, 2012, and was the twelfth season shown on The CW channel. This season was special because it was the first time the American version of the show was filmed and broadcast in high definition (HD).

This season featured fourteen contestants. Seven of them were British models who had been on Britain's Next Top Model before. The other seven were brand new American models.

A fashion expert named Kelly Cutrone joined the show as a judge. She replaced Vogue editor André Leon Talley. The other judges stayed the same.

The models traveled to different countries for this season. They visited Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They also went to the special areas of Macau and Hong Kong in China. This was the second time the show visited China.

The winner of the competition received many cool prizes. These included a modeling contract with LA Models & NY Model Management. They also got to be a guest reporter for the TV show Extra. The winner also got a fashion spread in Vogue Italia magazine. Plus, they got the cover and a spread in Beauty In Vogue. They also became the face of the America’s Next Top Model perfume called "Dream Come True". Another prize was making a music single with CBS Records. Finally, they won a US$100,000 contract with CoverGirl cosmetics.

The winner was 21-year-old British model Sophie Sumner from Oxford, England. The American model Laura LaFrate came in second place. This season was also unique because all three finalists made it to the top three without ever being in the bottom two during judging.

Casting Models

This season brought back seven models from past seasons of Britain's Next Top Model. They got a second chance to win the top title. Models from Cycles 1 and 7 of the British show were not included. Cycles 2, 3, 4, and 6 each had one contestant return. Cycle 5 had three contestants come back. Amelia Thomas from Cycle 6 was supposed to join but left during the casting process.

Criticism

During the filming of the show, there was an argument between judge Kelly Cutrone and contestant Louise Watts. Louise ended up leaving the show. After the episode aired, Kelly Cutrone posted videos online that some people thought were making fun of Louise. Fans of the show criticized Kelly, saying her actions were not kind.

Fun Facts

• Annaliese Dayes shared on Instagram in 2018 that during the photo shoot in episode 10, on top of Macau Tower, the models faced "hail stones and gale force winds" at 388 meters (about 1,273 feet) above the ground. She also said the weather was so bad that the tower was closed to the public that day.
• Dayes also revealed on Instagram that the episode 2 photo shoot with Kris Jenner happened on her 25th birthday. She called it "one of my best and most memorable birthdays ever!"
• It was planned for Amelia Thomas to be a contestant on America's Next Top Model as the eighth former Britain's Next Top Model contestant. However, she decided to leave before the competition started due to stress and other reasons.
