The American Renaissance was a special time in American history. It lasted from 1876 to 1917. During this period, Americans felt very proud and confident about their country. They believed the United States was a modern leader, much like ancient Greece and Rome were in their time. This era began after the Centennial Exposition in 1876. This event celebrated 100 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed. The period ended when the United States joined World War I.

What Made This Time Special?

During the American Renaissance, the United States was very focused on its national identity. People wanted to show what it meant to be American. This was seen in new ideas like modernism and amazing technology. It also appeared in classic art and building styles.

Americans showed their confidence through new inventions. A great example is the strong wire cables of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. Culturally, this period saw the rise of unique home designs, like those from the Prairie School. There were also grand buildings and sculptures in the Beaux-Arts style. The "City Beautiful" movement aimed to make cities more beautiful and organized. This was also a time when the United States expanded its influence around the world.

This era happened at the same time as the Gilded Age. The Gilded Age was a time of fast economic growth in America. It also coincided with a period called New Imperialism. This was when powerful countries expanded their control over other lands.

The World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 was a huge event. Its classical buildings truly impressed many people. Famous writer Henry Adams noted that people would remember the artists and architects from this time. He believed they would be remembered long after politicians and rich people were forgotten. Some of these famous names included Richard Morris Hunt, Henry Hobson Richardson, John La Farge, and Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

Inside the new Library of Congress, artist Edwin Blashfield painted murals. These artworks showed the theme of The Evolution of Civilization. This reflected the era's focus on progress.

In 1979, the Brooklyn Museum held an exhibition. It was called American Renaissance: 1876–1917. This show helped bring new interest to this important time in American art and architecture.
