Amity is a city in Yamhill County, Oregon, United States. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 1,757 people. The name "Amity" means friendship, and it's a friendly place to live!
History
Amity was founded between 1848 and 1849. Two brothers, Joseph and Ahio S. Watt, moved to Oregon using the Oregon Trail. Joseph's land became the town site.
The name "Amity" came from a school. Two groups of people had a disagreement, but they settled it peacefully. They built a school together and named it "Amity" to celebrate their friendship. Ahio Watt was the first teacher there.
- The Amity post office opened in 1852.
- Joseph Watt started Oregon's first woolen mill.
- In 1868, he shipped wheat all the way to England. This was the first time Oregon wheat was sent around Cape Horn.
- Amity officially became a town on October 19, 1880.
Geography
Amity is a small city. The United States Census Bureau says the city covers about 0.61 square miles (1.58 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a tiny bit of water.
