His Early Life and Studies

In 2011, he started working at the American University in Cairo. He taught there for about five years. From 2017 to 2021, he was a senior researcher at Stanford University. Today, he is a senior fellow and director of the Middle East Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He studies how governments work in the Middle East and North Africa. His Education Journey
Amr Hamzawy earned his first degree from Cairo University in Egypt. He then received two master's degrees. One was from the University of Amsterdam, and the other was from the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague. In 2002, he earned his PhD from the Free University of Berlin.
His Work as an Activist
Amr Hamzawy played an important part in the 2011 Egyptian revolution. During the revolution, he was a spokesperson for the "Board of Wise Men." This group tried to find solutions for the protesters and the government. He was offered a job as Minister of Youth, but he chose not to take it.
He later helped start a new political group in Egypt called the Freedom Egypt Party. This party supports liberal ideas, which means they believe in individual rights and freedoms.
In 2012, Amr Hamzawy was elected to the Egyptian Parliament. He represented the Heliopolis area and other nearby cities.
In 2013, he supported a campaign that asked for early presidential elections in Egypt. After a military takeover happened, he spoke out. He disagreed with shutting down some TV channels and holding President Morsi and other leaders. He wrote in a newspaper that people should not be hateful towards the Muslim Brotherhood.
Personal Life
Amr Hamzawy married Egyptian actress Basma Hassan in 2012. They later divorced in 2019.
