Amr Hamzawy (Egyptian Arabic: عمرو حمزاوى; born 1967) is an Egyptian political scientist, human rights activist, and a well-known public thinker. He is known for sharing his ideas on important topics.
About Amr Hamzawy
Amr Hamzawy studied political science and how societies develop in places like Cairo, The Hague, and Berlin. After finishing his studies and teaching for five years, he joined the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, DC. This organization works on global issues.
From 2005 to 2009, he was a senior expert focusing on Middle East politics. Later, he became a research director for the same organization in Beirut, Lebanon. In 2011, he started working at the American University in Cairo as a professor.
He also spent time as a senior researcher at Stanford University from 2017 to 2021. Today, he leads the Middle East Program at the Carnegie Endowment. His work focuses on how governments work in the Middle East and North Africa. He also studies how strong or weak societies are and the roles of governments and regular people in the region.
His studies and writings often look at how countries like Egypt can become more democratic. He also explores the balance between freedom and control in Egypt. He writes about political groups, human rights, and how Arab countries are governed.
Hamzawy was a member of the People's Assembly (Egypt's Parliament). He was elected after the Egyptian Revolution of 2011. He also served on the Egyptian National Council for Human Rights, which works to protect human rights. He writes columns for the Egyptian newspaper Al Shorouk.
His Education Journey
Amr Hamzawy earned his first university degree from Cairo University in Egypt. He then went on to get two master's degrees. One was from the University of Amsterdam, and the other from the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague. In 2002, he completed his PhD from the Free University of Berlin.
His Role in Politics
Before his political career, Hamzawy worked as a research director in the Middle East for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He played an important part in the 2011 Egyptian revolution. During this time, he was a spokesperson for the "Board of Wise Men." This group tried to find solutions between the protesters and the government.
After the revolution, he was offered a job as the Minister of Youth, but he chose not to accept it. He became involved in creating a new political party in Egypt that supports liberal ideas. He is a founding member of the Freedom Egypt Party.
In 2012, Amr Hamzawy was elected as a member of the Egyptian Parliament. He represented the areas of Heliopolis, Badr City, Shorouk, and Hikestep. In 2013, he supported a campaign called Tamarod. This campaign asked for early presidential elections in Egypt.
After some major political changes that followed, he spoke out. He disagreed with the closing down of certain TV channels and the detention of some political leaders. He wrote in a newspaper that people should not be hateful or seek revenge against political groups.
Personal Life
On February 15, 2012, Amr Hamzawy married Egyptian actress Basma Hassan in Cairo. They later divorced in 2019.
