Amzi Davis Harmon (born April 18, 1845 – died October 9, 1927) was an American soldier. He fought bravely during the American Civil War. This war was a big conflict in the United States from 1861 to 1865. It was fought between the Northern states (the Union) and the Southern states (the Confederacy).
Harmon earned the Medal of Honor, which is the highest award for bravery a soldier can receive in the United States. He received this special medal for a very courageous act during a battle.
Who Was Amzi D. Harmon?
Amzi Harmon was born in a town called Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. When he was old enough, he joined the Union Army. He signed up for service in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
He became a Corporal in Company K of the 211th Pennsylvania Infantry. This was a group of soldiers from Pennsylvania who fought for the Union.
A Heroic Act: The Medal of Honor
Corporal Harmon's heroic moment happened on April 2, 1865. This was during the Third Battle of Petersburg in Virginia. Petersburg was a very important city during the Civil War.
During the battle, Amzi Harmon captured a flag from the Confederate States Army. Capturing an enemy flag was a huge deal in battles. It showed great courage and often meant a big win for your side.
