Around the early 1900s, a baker named Baker Knowlton made this bread in Rockport. He would deliver fresh loaves to homes using a horse-drawn cart. Later, in the 1940s, a restaurant called The Blacksmith Shop started baking it too. They made about 80 loaves every day!
The restaurant owners, Bill and Melissa Smith, later built a bigger bakery. This allowed them to bake even more Anadama bread. They delivered it all over New England.
Anadama Bread's Popularity
Anadama bread was very popular in Rockport and a nearby town called Gloucester, Massachusetts. Local bakeries sold it widely until 1970. That's when the main Anadama Bread Bakery in Rockport closed. After that, smaller local bakeries and breakfast spots continued to bake it.
