Anastasios Metaxas (Greek: Αναστάσιος Μεταξάς; February 27, 1862 – January 28, 1937) was a talented Greek architect and a skilled shooter. He is famous for his work on important buildings and for winning medals at the Olympic Games.
Life and Achievements
A Royal Architect
Anastasios Metaxas was a special architect for King George I of Greece. He is most famous for helping to restore the Panathinaiko Stadium in Athens. This stadium was used for the first modern 1896 Summer Olympics! A person named George Averoff chose Metaxas for this big job. The main design for the stadium was by Ernst Ziller.
Metaxas studied architecture at the University of Dresden. He did very well in his studies. He worked on many important old buildings. These include the Benaki Museum and the National Archaeological Museum, Athens. He also designed new buildings. Some of his designs include St Andrew's Cathedral, Patras and many public buildings and homes in Athens.
An Olympic Shooter
Metaxas was also a very good shooter. He took part in four Summer Olympics and won two medals. His first Olympic appearance was at the 1896 Summer Olympics. This was held in the stadium he helped restore. He competed in two rifle events. He finished fourth in both the 200 meter military rifle and the 300 meter free rifle.
Ten years later, Metaxas competed at the 1906 Intercalated Games in Athens. He took part in nine events. His best result was a silver medal in the Trap, double shot event.
Two years after that, Metaxas won a bronze medal. This was in the trap shooting event at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. He tied for third place with a British shooter named Alexander Maunder. They both hit 57 out of 80 targets.
In 1912, Metaxas was 50 years old. He made his final Olympic appearance at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. He finished sixth in the trap competition. He also placed 35th in the 30 meter rapid fire pistol event.
Later in his life, Metaxas became involved in politics. He was a member of the People's Party.
