History of Anderson
Anderson got its first post office in 1886. The city was named after Robert Anderson, who was a local merchant (a person who sells things).
Geography and Location
Anderson is in the western part of McDonald County. It is located on Indian Creek. The city is where Missouri Routes 59 and 76 meet U.S. Route 71.
Interstate 49 runs just east of Anderson. You can get to the city from Exit 10 (MO 76) on this interstate.
- Neosho is about 16 miles (26 km) north.
- Bentonville, Arkansas, is about 26 miles (42 km) southeast.
- Pineville, which is the main town for McDonald County, is about 6 miles (10 km) south.
Land and Water
The U.S. Census Bureau says Anderson covers about 2.27 square miles (5.89 sq km). All of this area is land. Indian Creek forms part of the city's southern border. This creek flows south to join the Elk River. The Elk River then flows west into the Neosho River in Oklahoma.
