Andover is a town located in Allegany County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 1,634 people lived there. The town is on the eastern side of Allegany County. It also includes the village of Andover.

History of Andover

People first started settling in the Andover area around 1795. The Town of Andover was officially created in 1824. It was formed from a part of the town of Independence. Later, in 1855, the town grew bigger when a piece of the town of Wellsville was added to it.

Geography of Andover

Andover covers a total area of about 102.3 square kilometers (or 39.5 square miles). Most of this area is land, about 102.1 square kilometers (39.43 square miles). A very small part, about 0.2 square kilometers (0.07 square miles), is water.

The eastern edge of the town is the border with Steuben County.

Two main roads meet in Andover village: New York State Route 21 and New York State Route 417.

  • Thomas Allen – He was born in Andover. He later became a politician and the Secretary of State for Wisconsin.
  • Patsy Dougherty – He was a baseball player, an outfielder. He was the first player ever to hit two home runs in a single World Series game. He was also born in Andover.
