Andrés Gómez Santos is a famous former professional tennis player from Ecuador. He was born on February 27, 1960. Andrés Gómez was one of the best tennis players in the world. He reached a high ranking of No. 4 in singles and was even ranked No. 1 in doubles!
During his career, Gómez won many titles. He won 21 singles titles and 33 doubles titles. His biggest win was a singles major at the 1990 French Open. He also won two doubles majors: the 1986 US Open and the 1988 French Open.
Tennis runs in his family! His son, Emilio Gómez, is also a professional tennis player. His nephew Nicolás Lapentti was a professional tennis player too, reaching a world ranking of No. 6. Another nephew, Roberto Quiroz, is also a professional tennis player.

Andrés Gómez's Tennis Journey
Andrés Gómez started his professional tennis career in 1979. At first, he found a lot of success playing in doubles matches. He won five doubles titles in 1980 and seven more in 1981.
In 1986, Gómez became the world's No. 1 doubles player. That year, he won seven doubles events. One of his biggest wins was the US Open men's doubles title, where he played with his partner Slobodan Živojinović. He won another major doubles title in 1988 at the French Open, this time with Emilio Sánchez.
His first big singles title was in 1981 in Bordeaux, France. He then won the Italian Open twice. He won it in 1982 by beating Eliot Teltscher, and again in 1984 when he defeated Aaron Krickstein.
Winning the French Open
The year 1990 was very special for Andrés Gómez. He reached his first and only Grand Slam singles final at the French Open. To get to the final, he had to beat many tough players.
In the final match, he played against a young and rising star, 20-year-old Andre Agassi. Many people thought Agassi would win, but Gómez played incredibly well. He won the match in four sets, claiming the French Open title! After this amazing win, he reached his highest singles ranking of world No. 4.
Andrés Gómez continued to play for a few more years. He won his last singles title in 1991 in Brasília, Brazil. His final doubles title was in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain. He retired from professional tennis in 1995.
